If you’ve ever taken your child to the dentist, they likely have already let you know to avoid sweet foods. Unfortunately, sugar attracts harmful bacteria that contribute to issues like cavities and gum disease. That means you can help them maintain their oral health by opting for more wholesome options. By stocking up on snacks that support their oral well-being, you help them learn healthy habits that they’ll remember for life. If you’re not sure what to include on the menu, keep reading for 4 suggestions that will keep their smile happy!

Food #1: Yogurt

If you have a hard time getting your little one to drink milk and worry that they may not get enough calcium, then they might enjoy yogurt. It contains calcium to support stronger teeth and comes in a multitude of flavors so you’re sure to find one they’ll enjoy. Some are even printed with your kid’s favorite characters on the containers to make their healthy snack more fun! If you have a picky eater at home, you can try taking them to the grocery store to choose their favorite kind. Many children are more receptive to eating certain foods when they get to select them. You can also have them choose fun toppings like blueberries, strawberries, or bananas to add some extra flavor.

Food #2:  Celery or Carrots

Firm vegetables typically contain plenty of fiber that acts like a natural toothbrush when your child chews them. Two popular options with younger kids are celery and carrots. They also contain calcium and vitamin C which supports oral health. If your little one doesn’t like plain vegetables, then you can offer these up with sides. Celery can be filled with peanut butter or cream cheese for added protein and flavor, and carrots pair well with ranch or hummus as dips.

Food #3: Orange Slices

Citrus fruits like oranges have lots of vitamin C to support the connective tissue in your child’s gums. This helps them stay in excellent condition so they’re more likely to resist gum disease and infection. As a bonus, many kids love oranges for their naturally sweet, refreshing flavor making this a popular after-school snack.

Food #4: Water

Many juices and sodas marketed to children have high sugar levels that can eat away at your little one’s enamel. You can keep their grin in top condition by encouraging them to drink more water, instead. It rinses away unhealthy germs and food particles as well as neutralizes potential acid damage to protect their teeth. Plus, it keeps their bodies hydrated to keep their systems happy.

By adding these items to your child’s daily diet, you’ll help them achieve a happier, more wholesome smile!
